Guiding Principles for Policies and Procedures for Los Angeles Technology Center

 

Student Bookstore

  • All purchases made at the bookstore, including ID cards, books, and other supplies, are final. There will be no refunds or exchanges allowed.
  • For a fee of $10, students can purchase a school photo ID from the bookstore, valid for the entire academic year.
    • Students attending class at Cochran Middle School must carry a school ID. 
 

Attendance

  • Consistent attendance is vital for a successful education.
  • Excessive absences can lead to decreased grades or removal from the program.
  • In an absence, students are encouraged to communicate with their instructors by calling the school, emailing, or messaging through platforms like Remind or Schoology.
  • Students may be dropped from class for the following reasons: 

 

  • Failing to attend the first class meeting at the time class is scheduled to begin
  • Being absent for more a week without contacting the instructor
  • Making unsatisfactory progress in a course
  • Attending class irregularly


  • Violating school policies

  • Attending regularly, participating fully in class activities, and completing my assignments

  • Learning from other students, and sharing what I have learned
  • Working collaboratively with classmates and instructors.
 

Breaks

  • Students are given a short break from 10:00 AM to 10:15 AM and a lunch break from 12:15 PM to 12:45 PM.
  • It's expected that students return to their classes promptly when the bell rings, signaling the end of these breaks.
 

Transportation

  • The LAUSD provides free TAP cards to all enrolled students. 
  • For more details, students can consult their teachers or the counseling office.
 

Food and Beverages

  • A lunch truck is available from Monday to Saturday during the 10:00 AM break.
  • Vending machines are also accessible on the main campus. However, students are reminded that food and beverages are not allowed inside the classrooms.
 

Lost and Found

  • The main office houses lost and found items.
  • Students are advised to keep their valuables secure and to report any lost or stolen items immediately.
 

Parking Guidelines

  • Designated student parking is available across 8th Avenue, but space is limited.
  • Unauthorized parking in disabled spots will result in fines and towing. Students should also be aware of other parking restrictions to avoid penalties.
  • Street Parking is available; however, students are responsible for noting parking restrictions to avoid tickets. 
  • Parking is not available to students in the Cochran Middle School Parking lot, accessible through 18th street. 
  • Only students taking classes IN THE EVENING at Cochran Middle School can park IN THE EVENING on the Bronson Parking lot. Morning and afternoon students should not park in the Bronson parking lot. 
  • Morning students taking classes at Cochran Middle School must park on the street or at the LATC parking lot on 8th street. 
 

Security & Safety

  • The school prioritizes safety with Campus Aides and School Safety Officers (SSO) patrolling the campus and parking areas.

  • Any suspicious activities or potential hazards should be reported immediately.
 

Scooters and Bicycles

  • Bicycles and scooters must be parked in designated areas only.
  • Do not obstruct entrances, exits, sidewalks, or ramps with parked bicycles or scooters.
  • Lock bicycles and scooters securely when not in use.
  • The school is not responsible for any accidents, injuries, or theft of bicycles or scooters.
  • Any accidents, incidents, or rule violations must be promptly reported to the school administration.
 

Visitor Policy

  • Visitors are only allowed in classrooms with prior permission from an administrator. 
  • All students must be registered before attending a class.
  • Children are strictly prohibited in classrooms.
 

General Rules  

  • LATC is a drug and alcohol-free environment: do not possess or be under the influence of these substances. 
  • Be respectful to all students and staff. 
  • Do not use profanity on campus.  
  • NO CHEATING - Tampering with any testing materials or cheating during examinations will result in suspension or termination. 
  • Do not use cell phones make phone calls in any of the buildings; please step outside if you must make or receive a call. Cell phones may be used for instructional purposes. 
  • Students must be in classrooms except during passing, break, and lunch periods. 
  • Maintain a smoke-free and drug-free campus (including cars parked on campus) 
  • For information about service animals, see the Adults with Disability Program Staff or Administration.
  • Be on campus for official reasons only (i.e., instruction, registration,  school events).

Student Dress Policy 

Clothing worn at Los Angeles Technology Center and its branch locations should not detract from the educational environment. The following guidelines determine student dress that is considered to be in violation of the student dress code:

  • Clothing that causes excessive exposure, such as bare midriff, low-cut, see-through, or any excessively tight or torn clothing item that results in excessive exposure; 
  • Clothing and accessories such as hats, belts, belt buckles, bandannas, headbands, or any other article worn that indicates a particular gang or group affiliation; 
  • Oversize pants or pants worn below the waist; 
  • Short shorts, short skirts, or short dresses that over-expose; 
  • Clothing or accessories with profanity, obscenities or references to drugs.
 

The administration makes the final decision as to the appropriateness of attire.  

 

Student Rules  

Students will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action, including dismissal, for the following (bolded items indicate grounds for immediate dismissal): 

    • Possession or sale of WEAPONS 
    • Possession, use, or sale of DRUGS OR ALCOHOL 
    • Possession, use, or sale of DRUG PARAPHERNALIA 
  • SEXUAL ASSAULT OR BATTERY 
  • SEXUAL HARASSMENT 
  • HATE VIOLENCE: Caused, attempted, or threatened to cause or participate in an act of hate violence against others/property of others based on that person's perceived or actual race, color, religion, nationality, country of origin, ancestry, disability, gender and sexual orientation 
  • Causing, attempting to cause, threatening to cause, or aiding the infliction of PHYSICAL INJURY or VIOLENCE upon the person of another 
  • INTIMIDATING, HARASSING, OR THREATENING BEHAVIOR toward school staff/students which disrupts classwork, disrupts school operations and invades the rights of others by creating an intimidating or hostile environment, including BULLYING 
  • TERRORIST THREATS and a threat to commit a crime against school staff/ property 
  • Possession of IMITATION FIREARMS (i.e., replica guns, "look-alikes") • DISRUPTION OF SCHOOL ACTIVITIES OR DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR • OBSCENE ACT, VULGARITY OR HABITUAL PROFANITY 
  • INTENTIONAL DAMAGE TO SCHOOL OR PRIVATE PROPERTY, including graffiti and vandalism 
  • STEALING or attempting to steal school or personal property
  • Commission or attempting to commit ROBBERY OR EXTORTION
  • RECEIVING STOLEN SCHOOL OR PRIVATE PROPERTY
  • TOBACCO USE on campus 
  • FORGERY OR FALSIFICATION of school documents 
 

NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY 

  • Federal law and District policy prohibit discrimination or harassment based on actual or perceived race, color, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or disability. In addition, laws protect you from sexual harassment. No student, teacher, administrator, or other school employee can make unwelcome sexual advances to you or request sexual favors from you. They cannot touch or speak to you in a sexual manner at school or a school-sponsored event. Sexual harassment may include physical, verbal, visual, or threatening conduct. 
  • The Los Angeles Unified School District is committed to providing a safe and civil learning environment, free from discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying. If you feel that your rights under the law are being violated, report it to an administrator immediately.

Disability Support Services (DSS)

  • Students with disabilities can seek guidance from a qualified advisor available on specific days and times.
  • The services include course advisement, test and classroom accommodations, specialized equipment, and agency referrals.

LAUSD is committed to providing a safe and civil learning environment, free from discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and/or bullying. If you feel that any of your rights under the law are being violated, report it to an administrator. The Administration of LATC firmly believes that each student has the right to visit a counselor or administrator to discuss his/her concerns. A Suggestion/Concern Form, available in the Main Office, serves as the primary system for documenting and resolving student, staff, or visitor concerns or suggestions. Each form is reviewed by the administration.
